Moon Duo - Occult Architecture, Vol. 1 (2017)

Artist Biography by Heather Phares

A project of Wooden Shjips' Erik "Ripley" Johnson and Sanae Yamada, San Francisco's Moon Duo are a psychedelic Krautrock band with chilly electronic underpinnings and drones inspired by Spacemen 3, Silver Apples, and Suicide. The group formed in 2009 and began issuing releases in short order, including the Love on the Sea12" on Sick Thirst, which they followed with the Killing TimeEP on Sacred Bones. Moon Duo made the jump to Woodsist for 2010's full-length Escape, which offered the most expansive and melodic take on their trippy sounds yet. After touring nearly incessantly following that release, Moon Duomoved their operation to the Souterrain Transmissions imprint in Berlin for Mazes later in the year, recording the set at home in San Francisco and mixing it in Germany. The album, released in the spring of 2011, followed widely acclaimed performances at SXSW; the band's sound on that record focused more on tightly written (and brightly produced) songs with fixed drum machine-made motorik rhythms. The set also got the remix treatment later in the year with participation from Psychic Ills, Purling Hiss, and Sonic Boom, to name a few.

The band's next full-length, Circles, appeared in the fall of 2012 on Sacred Bones, and was accompanied by a remix album (Circles Remixed) the following year with the album's tracks reworked by artists like Eric Copeland and Umberto. The band's release of stopgap material continued in 2014 with the live album Live in Ravenna, which featured drummer John Jeffrey. After moving their home base to Portland and with Jeffrey on board, the trio began recording its next album in a self-described dark basement. Mixed again in Germany by Jonas Verwijnen, 2015's Shadow of the Sun was the group's densest, most psychedelic record to date. At the end of the year, the band embarked on a lengthy European tour, then returned again in 2016 for more dates. When back home in Portland, they began work on their next album, both at home and at the Type Foundry. Occult Architecture, Vol. 1 was released in early 2017, then Occult Architecture, Vol. 2followed soon after. The first volume was intended to represent yin and the second volume yang, in an effort to explore both light and darkness within their sound.

Full Moon - 1989 - Full Moon

British Epic / Space Metal from London, England. From 1989 self-titled full length debut
This band was formed in 1985. They published the single "Eternal Now" in 1987 and, this one included, 2 studio albums. The second one was 1992 "Euphoria". There is also a live album called "A Live Encounter". They have nothing in common with the 70s Full Moon with the Fisher brothers! Several uploads are circulating dating this LP to 1980: that happened because of the confusion with those guys.

Lucifer Was - Underground and Beyond (Norway Progressive Rock 1971-1997)

Lucifer Was biography
This early 70's Norwegian band played together for years without ever releasing an album; that is, until label Record Heaven heard about them in the late 90's and convinced them to re-record songs they had played live at the time. Thanks to RH, we can now enjoy a collection of highly energetic, raw and aggressive 70's power rock recorded with pristine modern technology. The band's material is reminiscent of BLACK SABBATH, URIAH HEEP, early SCORPIONS and JETHRO TULL, albeit a very manic TULL as the flutes battle it out savagely with pounding guitars. Their second album features no less than two flutes, two Mellotrons, electric and acoustic guitars, bass, drums and percussion as well as two vocalists. Their third also contains additional piano, cello, violin, viola, sax, trumpet, trombone and tuba contributed by various guest artists.

Johnny Winter - 1969 - Second Winter

John Dawson Winter III (February 23, 1944 – July 16, 2014), known as Johnny Winter, was an American musician, singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer. Best known for his high-energy blues-rock albums and live performances in the late 1960s and 1970s, Winter also produced three Grammy Award-winning albums for blues singer and guitarist Muddy Waters. After his time with Waters, Winter recorded several Grammy-nominated blues albums. In 1988, he was inducted into the Blues Foundation Hall of Fame and in 2003, he was ranked 63rd in Rolling Stone magazine's list of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time".

Second Winter is the third studio album by Texas blues guitarist Johnny Winter, released in 1969. The original plan was to edit the songs from the recording session into one album but it was later thought that all the recordings were good enough to be released. The album was released as a "three-sided" LP, with a blank fourth side on the original vinyl. Two more songs, "Tell the Truth" and "Early in the Morning" were left unfinished but released on a 2004 re-release of the album.

Pagan Altar - The Room of Shadows (2017)

Biography

Pagan Altar was formed in 1978 by Terry and Alan Jones, who are father and son, respectively. Alongside Witchfinder General, they are one of the few NWOBHM bands to play doom metal. The band's concerts are characterised by moody, epic and heavy music, blended with stage effects which accentuate their interest in occult themes.

Pagan Altar's only release from the NWOBHM era was an independent, self-released, self-titled demo album (which was heavily bootlegged in later years). The album would be re-released as an official full-length on Oracle Records in 1998, retitled "Volume 1".

The group reformed in 2004 to re-record an album of previously unreleased material which had been written during their original tenure as a band. The resulting album, "Lords of Hypocrisy", met with a positive reception from fans, and a third full-length album duly followed in 2006, entitled "Mythical and Magical".

In 2008, Pagan Altar co-headlined the "Metal Brew" Festival in Mill Hill, alongside Cloven Hoof. Both bands also performed at the "British Steel IV" Festival at the Camden Underworld in 2009.Pagan Altar returned to headline the "British Steel V" Festival in April 2011 and the "Live Evil" Festival in October 2011.

In 2012, Pagan Altar began work on their next album "Never Quite Dead", in a purpose-built recording studio in the back garden of vocalist Terry Jones's home. The 2013 lineup included: Dean Alexander on drums, Vince Hempstead on rhythm guitar, and William Gallagher on bass guitar.

On 15 May 2015, vocalist Terry Jones died of cancer. The band had finished recording their upcoming album, which was in its final mastering stage. In 2017, Alan Jones announced that he intends to partially re-record the band's upcoming album as he nor the late Terry Jones were happy with the finished product.

Leif Edling - Songs of Torment, Songs of Joy (2008)

This is Candlemass' bassist, Leif Edling's solo project. Candlemass is regarded a legend in the doom metal scene and this solo project is no different. This a classy doom metal release.

This release is bass heavy with slow composition and nice, structured and rythumic drums as expected from a doom metal release. The vocals are haunting and eerie. Some electric samples are used which fit in well and adds to the depressive ambience this album creates. The guitars are great and sets the flows of the song. There are hardly any solos but thats doom metal style. As said before, the drums flow along rather well. There is no brutal drumming, only slow and atmospheric drumming which creates a haunting feeling. The bass is good though not so audible.

As it was released recently, the production is good and almost every instrument is audible. The vocals have been mixed such as they sound like they are coming from deep inside a cave.

The album creates a magnificently haunting ambience. The slow and doomy instruments make you feel like you are trapped in a closed room and tormented. Classic doom metal style.

The only flaw is the song length. They are shorter than typical doom metal songs which are quite lenghthy. What amount of material exists here, is really good. Lief Edling surely is a great doom metal instrumentalist.

Electric Orange - Krautrock from Hell (2010)

Electric Orange begun as the personal vehicle of multi-instrumentalist Dirk Jan Müller in July 1992. On their early stage Electric Orange created music for aural adventurers, heavy krautrock influenced, bearing distinct semblance to early Ash Ra Tempel. Their official releases on Delerium had a more modern feel due to the contemporary dance electronic beats and some strong bass grooves (maybe an influence of the label aiming at the rave market). However, their privately released CDRs had a rather improvised feel to their out-there spacey excursions.
