Bob Theil - So Far [1982]

Bob Theil is a Scottish born singer-songwriter and guitarist, steeped in the tradition of the great acoustic troubadours from the UK scene circa 1965 and onwards. His songs and music recall what for many is considered a halcyon period when the likes of Roy Harper, Bert Jansch, Michael Chapman, Richard Thompson and Al Stewart to name a few, were plying their trade in the UK clubs and college circuit. His voice, writing and guitar playing are an eclectic mix of folk and rock influences.

Other obvious influences at the time were Bob Dylan, Sandy Denny, Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen and Nick Drake as well as a mix of artists such as Jethro Tull, Rory Gallagher, Led Zeppelin, Genesis.

The use of mainly 12 string acoustic/electric guitar in his unique picking (finger and plectrum) style lends itself perfectly to songs that are an evocative mixture of Celtic atmosphere on the one hand, to at other times an acoustic rock sound that has been likened to Pink Floyd. In a way, this comparison is understandable given the Gilmouresque electric leads featured on a few tracks on his debut LP "So Far" (1982).

This LP has become a collector's item of some value. The August 2004 issue of Record Collector contains an excellent review of the album, which has now been made available on CD by Recordplex Productions in Canada .

In 1993 Bob Theil also had the CD "Bridging the Silence" released on Koch International under the pseudonym Lawrence Woolfe. This CD however is no longer available, although many of the songs may re-emerge in stripped down form as part of a number of unreleased projects.

More recently in the summer of 2003, a new collection of songs was released in the form of an limited edition LP "Playing it all for laughs" aimed mainly at the collectors' market. A CD issue is also in the pipeline.

Antimatter - The Judas Table (2015)

Antimatter, a UK melancholic rock band, is the project of longtime member Mick Moss. The project was formed in 1997 by Duncan Patterson (former bassist/songwriter of Anathema) and Moss.[3] The pair released three albums together – Saviour, Lights Out and Planetary Confinement. Shortly after the completion of Planetary Confinement, Patterson left to start another band called Íon. Moss continued and released the project's fourth album, Leaving Eden, following with 2009's 'Live@An Club', (released on his own label Music in Stone), 2010's Alternative Matter and 2012's Fear of a Unique Identity. Most recently Moss has released the 6th Antimatter album, The Judas Table, in 2015.[4]

The earlier Antimatter albums, Saviour and Lights Out, focused on melodic vocal lines (often by guest female vocalists), dark electronica and balanced on the borderline between gothic and trip hop. Planetary Confinement marked the start of a shift towards more of an acoustic based melancholic rock sound. Leaving Eden, with Mick Moss as the only songwriter and singer, continues in this direction and also gives electric guitars a more prominent role. The result is a heavier sounding album, with little trace of the ambient sound of early Antimatter. The album Fear of a Unique Identity presents a more layered, energetic picture, mixing all of Antimatter's past textures with a New Wave feel

Virgin Steele - Age of Consent (1988)

Age of Consent is the fourth full-length album by US heavy metal band Virgin Steele. The album took eight months to complete, a change from Noble Savage which was recorded in only a few weeks, and was finally released in October 1988. It received scarce promotion and distribution by their small label, resulting in very low sales. The songs of this album follow in style and content the music of the previous album Noble Savage, adding a more polished sound and production.[5] At the time of release, the band faced legal and financial setbacks that brought to the unofficial disbandment of Virgin Steele.[6] Joe O'Reilly, although credited for playing bass on the album, was ill at the time of recording and was ghosted by DeFeis and Pursino.[6]

The album was reissued on CD in 1997 by Noise Records, with a new song listing, a new cover and many bonus tracks. In November 2011 Age of Consent was once again reissued by Steamhammer Records, a subsidiary of SPV, with the same track list as the 1997 release, but with an added bonus CD (named Under the Graveyard Moon) containing 7 additional tracks

Snowy Dunes - Atlantis (2017)

Snowy Dunes is a rather young Swedish band whose debut came out in 2015 and was already a good Psychedelic/Blues Rock album which showed that these guys have talent and a potential to be great. I also got the chance to see them live at Freak Valley Festival 2016, and live is where they impress, they played tight and the singer got good stage presence and a voice that reminds me of the range Janis Joplin had. So their sophomore album, “Atlantis“, has come upon us and I was curious to hear if they had evolved and refined their sound.

Empyrium - A Wintersunset- 1996

Empyrium is a German symphonic folk/doom metal and (later) neofolk/dark folk band.

Band's history

Empyrium was founded in 1994 by Markus Stock (mostly using the pseudonym Ulf Theodor Schwadorf) and Andreas Bach, but later many other participated.

The band draws inspiration from nature as some of the album titles reveal. Consequently, Empyrium are often referred to as a dark folk or apocalyptic folk band, expressing in their music (most conspicuously in the last two albums) sentiments akin to those expressed by some other 'legislators' of the genre, as Forseti, Orplid, and Ulver (Kveldssanger). Connoisseurs of dark folk will mention that many of Empyrium's compositions are true representatives of the genre, as, for instance, Dying Brokenhearted, The Shepherd and the Maiden Ghost ("Where At Night..."), Heimwärts, Waldpoesie, Die Schwäne im Schilf ("Weiland"). Intricately woven and always impregnated with an exquisite wistfulness or profound, remorseful sadness (Dying Brokenhearted), these compositions may be regarded as a manifesto of the dark-folkloristic gloomy and pantheistic Weltanschauung. The lyrics are mostly in English, though in Weiland only German is performed. Like the Norwegian black metal band Burzum, Empyrium also used Theodor Kittelsen's drawing on one of their album covers (Where at Night the Wood Grouse Plays).
