Radio Moscow - The Great Escape of Leslie Magnafuzz (2011)

Radio Moscow is an American psychedelic rock band from Story City, Iowa. Formed in 2003, the band currently features singer-guitarist Parker Griggs, bassist Anthony Meier and drummer Paul Marrone. Signed to Alive Naturalsound Records, the trio has released five full-length albums as of June 2014.

The Great Escape of Leslie Magnafuzz is the third studio album by American psychedelic rock band Radio Moscow. Released on October 11, 2011, it was recorded, mixed and mastered at California's Prairie Sun Recording Studios, produced by frontman Parker Griggs.

History

Upon returning to Iowa, Luke McDuff was brought in as the new bassist of the group.[1] They recorded the band's debut album in 2006, with Auerbach handling production duties;[2] Radio Moscow was released in February 2007.[3]Shortly after the release of the album, McDuff was replaced by Zach Anderson.[1]

Since 2007, Radio Moscow have toured many regions of the world, with a number of live drummers including Keith Rich, Todd Stevens and Paul Marrone.[1] The band's second album Brain Cycles was released in April 2009, this time self-produced by the band.[3] Radio Moscow later released their third album The Great Escape of Leslie Magnafuzz in October 2011.[4] A previously unreleased album entitled 3 & 3 Quarters, recorded in 2003 and featuring Schoonover only, was released in April 2012.[5] Zach Anderson and Cory Berry went on to form Blues Pillsin Sweden.

On their official website Radio Moscow announced that they plan on releasing their fourth studio album sometime in 2013. Bassist Billy Ellsworth left the band in July, and was replaced with Anthony Meier. On July 15, 2013 the band announced that they were happy with the progress of their new album and planned to 'road test' them in Europe. On The 11th of December 2013 it was announced that the band was set to begin recording their latest album this month. The album was completed by the 22nd of January 2014. On February the 11th the band announced their fourth album is to be called Magical Dirt. The album was released on the 17th of June 2014.

Musical style and influence

Radio Moscow are often compared stylistically to blues rock bands from the 1960s and 1970s, particularly fellow power trios like Cream, The Jimi Hendrix Experienceand Blue Cheer.[6][7] Reviewing the band's self-titled album for music website AllMusic, Greg Prato described the group's sound as "a throwback to the classic rock of the '70s", comparing certain songs to artists such as Ram Jam, The Allman Brothers Band and The Jeff Beck Group.[8] Following the release of Brain Cycles, Radio Moscow have also been cited as an example of the stoner rock genre.

Mondo Drag - Mondo Drag (2015)

BIOGRAPHY

The creatures known as Mondo Drag hailed from deep along the banks of the wild Mississippi River where they created ominous, spiritual, savage psychedelic revival sounds. Summoned to the edge of the Earth, they journeyed west, collecting new sounds reminiscent of desert scapes, acid dreams, all-night prog vinyl spinning and a dark galaxy of protometal swirls, exalting the band unto new, wickedly brilliant horizons. Now settled in the deep realms of Oakland, the ensemble continues to create cosmically proportioned, churning jams evocative of a rainbow of obvious inspirations but also numinous new sounds emerging from the organ - heavy riffs. If you love Blue Cheer, Black Sabbath, Can, Atomic Rooster, Hawkwind, Budgie, Uriah Heep, Deep Purple, Italian prog, Krautrock in general, and heavy space-outs....get into Mondo Drag. They'll knock your socks off, let your hair down and take you on a mind's eye exploration you won't soon forget. Though they exude love for the spiraling tapestry of heavy psychedelia of the past, they are on a rock and roll mission all their own: an unearthed prog band, futuristic in their time capsule, rocketing forward through the depths, gathering the sounds of space itself.

The Myrrors - Arena Negra 2015

The Myrrors are an experimental psychedelic rock band from Arizona, formed in early 2007. Originally consisting of Nik Rayne on vocals and guitar, Claira Safi on bass, and Grant Beyschau on drums, they eventually recorded the album "Burning Circles in the Sky," released independently in a run of fifty screen-printed CDs. Rhythm guitarist Cesar Alatorre-Mena joined not long after.

The group disbanded in 2009 but eventually reformed in 2013. The following year "Burning Circles in the Sky" was reissued in a number of limited edition runs and they released the new instrumental EP "Solar Collector" on both cassette tape and vinyl. Their second proper studio album, "Arena Negra," was released in 2015 on Beyond Beyond Is Beyond Records, a year which saw the addition of bassist Cody Schwartz, violist Miguel Urbina, and second guitarist Connor Gallaher, as well as a shift in the band's sound towards heavier, more experimental compositions.

Gabor Szabo- Jazz Raga (1966)

Although largely ignored today except by astute guitar students, the late Gabor Szabo left behind a large body of work that is still very much misunderstood. A descendent of Hungarian gypsies, Szabo's guitar style was very much in line in with his heritage, full of dark and mysterious textures that were the antithesis of the modern jazz guitar sound of the '50s and '60s. His first recordings with drummer Chico Hamilton announced a new voice that would slowly take shape over the years as Szabo would lead his own series of albums for the Impulse label and then later for Creed Taylor's CTI imprimatur.

Much of Gabor's output remains elusive these days, some of it only available on pricey Japanese imports. Following his iconoclastic Impulse debut, Gypsy '66 and a reunion with Chico Hamilton entitled Spellbinder, Szabo released an album that hinted at the Middle Eastern twang that seemed to be part and parcel of the guitarist's own style. Jazz Raga, as the liner notes tell the story, was supposed to feature Szabo's touring unit at the time, but for some inexplicable reasons his crew failed to show at the studio. In the end, drummer Bernard Purdie and bassists Johnny Gregg and Bob Bushnell showed up to save the date and the results are nothing short of intoxicating.

As a discographer of Szabo's work, writer Douglas Payne has called Jazz Raga 'a brilliant, much-derided record featuring Szabo's distinctive guitar and his overdubbed, out-of-tune sitar playing.' He goes on to add, 'Too easily dismissed, the record contains some of Szabo's very best guitar work: enchanting single-line runs mixed with jangled chords, repetitive riffs/drones and memorable, melodic solos.' Concurring with Payne's summation, this writer has also found the record to be particularly rewarding, despite some occasional lapses that can give the record a dated quality, specifically the cover of the Rolling Stones' 'Paint it Black' and the psychedelic vocals on 'Walking On Nails.'

While some have made too much of the sitar's use on this record, the overall effect is a hypnotic one that is really not much different from Szabo's usual approach. Among the many highlights are such Gabor originals as 'Mizrab' and 'Sophisticated Wheels, ' as well as Gary McFarland's 'Raga Doll.' Throughout, Purdie proves to be a particularly resourceful drummer, adapting to this unusual format with ease, and both bassist also contribute to the overall success of this endeavor.

Although the past few months have brought import reissues of Szabo's CTI gems such as Mizrab, Rambler, and Macho, his Impulse catalog has largely remained untapped here in the US. A potent reminder of Szabo's pan-ethnic approach and charm, Jazz Raga deserves another chance to bend today's ears with its mystical allure.

C. Andrew Hovan, All About Jazz

A brilliant, much-derided record featuring Szabo’s distinctive guitar and his overdubbed, out-of-tune sitar playing. Too easily dismissed, JAZZ RAGA contains some of Szabo’s very best guitar work: enchanting single-line runs mixed with jangled chords, repetitive riffs/drones and memorable, melodic solos. The short tunes (most under four minutes each) include Szabo staples like "Mizrab" and "Comin’ Back" and bring out Szabo’s ability to effectively compress good ideas. Funk drummer Bernard Purdie contributes successfully to the percussive groove and even the odd-sounding sitar isn’t as obtrusive as is often suggested. While still not available on CD, JAZZ RAGA was most recently notable as the inspiration behind Beck's excellent ODELAY.

Doug Payne

Guitarist Gabor Szabo always had an open mind toward various forms of rock and pop music. For this out-of-print LP, not only does he play guitar, but he overdubbed sitar on all but one of the numbers. With originals that include "Mizrab," "Search for Nirvana," "Krishna," and "Ravi," the influence of Indian music is quite strong, and this must be the only album to have versions of both "Caravan" and The Rolling Stones' "Paint It Black." Szabo, who is joined by bassist Johnny Gregg, drummer Bernard Purdie and sometimes guitarist Bob Bushnell, emphasizes trance-like songs, but despite (or maybe because of) his attempts to be "with it," the music is somewhat dated today.

Sacred Blood - Argonautica (2015)

Hailing from Athens, Greece and formed in 2003, SACRED BLOOD quickly established themselves as a unique epic metal band through the use of traditional folk instruments in their music. Each of the band’s albums is clearly distinguished by a theme revolving around Ancient Greece. This time we’re dealing with Argonautica and the myth of the voyage of Jason and the Argonauts to retrieve the Golden Fleece.

The use of folk instruments such as Irish bagpipes and the bodhran as well as female choir vocals and narrations in Ancient Greek take the music of Sacred Blood to a completely new dimension making it a most interesting and pleasing listen.

The album features a number of guest appearances including Nicholas Leptos (WARLORD, ARRAYAN PATH), Kyriakos Vasdokas and Leon Tsorbatsoglou (CROSSWIND) and Vangelis Yalamas (FRAGILE VASTNESS). Uilleann pipes (Irish bagpipes) and the bodhran performed by Sir Andrew Mc Pleary.

Witchwood - Litanies From The Woods (2015)

Italian dark progressive rock band Witchwood has a new album titled Litanies from the Woods.

The debut album “Litanies from the Woods” includes ten tracks and is a well-balanced combination of hard rock, progressive rock, psychedelia, blues and southern rock with a dreary and vintage 1970s atmosphere. The instruments used include Hammond organ, piano, Moog synthesizer, flute, harmonica, and mandolin.

Witchwood was born from the ashes of the Buttered Bacon Biscuits, who released one album in 2010 titled “From the Solitary Woods.” The band played live as guest in Italy for Uriah Heep and Jethro Tull.

After the the Buttered Bacon Biscuits disbanded, some members of the band, Ricky (also in Witche’s Brew), Andy, Steve and Sam, joined with new member Luca Celotti on bass, to form Witchwood.
